Some practice problems and solutions
Here are the problems I did in recitation today. They are scans of notes, so they are rather garbled, but you should be able to follow them.
Common Sense
There is a little section in Resnick on p. 91-96 called “Common Sense of Relativity” that is very well worth reading. In trying to get through problem sets, prepare for exams, etc., it is easy to overlook the revolution in your outlook as you learn the special theory. Newton’s ideas are really embedded in your thinking (even though you may not really be aware of it) and when you learn relatvity, you overturn the idea you certainly have of Absolute space and time. Most of the math in 8.033 is pretty easy, but learning a new way if thinking is not so easy. Make sure you take some time to appreciate the difficult task you are undertaking.
