   2 We don’t go out of our way to make this information available, nor
   3 to
   4 protect it.

   6 There is no listing of websites hosted on scripts.mit.edu or their
   7
   8 maintainers. If we’re asked to by IS&T staff (e.g., IT Security or
   9 User
  10 Accounts) or law enforcement, we will identify the maintainer of a
  11 single
  12 website. We may also do so if needed in the process of answering a
  13
  14 good-faith support ticket about the maintenance of that website.
  15 Otherwise, we avoid giving this information out to the public for
  16 the
  17 asking.

  19 That said, for multiple technical reasons ranging from the
  20 configuration
  21 of our servers to the properties of various parts of Athena
  22 infrastructure
  23 we build upon, it’s generally possible to determine the ownership
  24 of a
  25 website with some concerted effort, including which users or groups
  26 have
  27 the ability to publish the site and who was the original creator of
  28 a file
  29 in a locker. Most of this is due to the Athena locker model itself,
  30 and
  31 applies equally to sites hosted on other services such as
  32 web.mit.edu.

  34 Most other MIT hosting options will also reveal the owner’s
  35 identity
  36 publicly through Moira’s hostname registry. If you wish to have a
  37 truly
  38 anonymous website, you’ll need to get hosting independent of the
  39 MIT
  40 infrastructure.
