About MIT SEBC

The Science and Engineering Business Club (known as SEBC on the acronym-hungry campus of MIT) provides undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral members of MIT an incredible selection of events featuring speakers and panelists who explore how to achieve a strong business career with a science and engineering background. We also regularly host networking events so that students and industry leaders can mingle and make contacts that would be otherwise unattainable. See more about SEBC, and continue visiting this page for updates about upcoming events. Also, you may join our mailing list that reminds members of upcoming events by sending an email inquiry to our MD of Publicity (Daniel Handal, dhandal[at]mit[dot]edu). This email reaches the sebc organization committee, so it can also be used for general questions or for learning about joining the committee.

Our Mission

To serve as an unbiased, student-based educational resource and network for undergraduate students, graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows seeking careers in business. Motivation The educational process at MIT develops excellent analytic, quantitative, interpersonal, and organizational skills that would be an asset in many careers. Unfortunately, the traditional academic experience does not provide much information or guidance about careers outside academic science and applied engineering. The MIT SEBC aims to help MIT students and postdoctoral fellows translate their skills into business settings. Objective We invite representatives from a variety of disciplines (i.e. entrepreneurship, high technology, finance, investment banking, management consulting, patent law, and venture capitial) to speak about their industries, their experiences, and the opportunities in their areas. These talks are advertised in the scientific community at MIT and take place on campus. We also work to forge closer ties between the business community at the Sloan School of Management and the scientific community at MIT through co-sponsorships and cross-registration of events. Additionally, we sponsor a variety of workshops on skills such as resume/CV writing and interviewing, email announcements about upcoming presentations and career opportunities to interested members (1000+ and growing) of the MIT scientific community, and maintain a list of alumni of MIT programs who have gone into non-academic careers. This will act as a resource for undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows seeking careers outside of academia.

SEBC Focus Groups

SEBC is a unique group because we cater to MIT’s student population. By breaking down our organization into smaller focus groups that plan and run events in particular fields, we cater to the needs of our members through exposure to various business endeavors. The current managing directors are not only ambitious, but organized and dedicated to the goal of exposing our members to a wide range of businesses.

Consulting Focus Group
The mission of the SEBC Consulting Group is to bring in both boutique and large companies that can provide students with information, resources, and contacts that will help them succeed in their careers after MIT. We allow small firms to gain exposure, and offer large firms the chance to continue strong relationships with MIT through the use of our group. Utilizing SEBC’s membership of over 1200 students, we provide companies with a diverse student base that can be tailored to their specific requirements and focus groups. In the past we have showcased events as simple as informational sessions and boutique consulting panels. The purpose of these panels is mainly to inform the student body about the broad scope that consulting covers, and show them the resources available to enter the industry with their technical and business degrees. We also undertake more complex events such as networking workshops and mock case study interview sessions with the intent of allowing MIT students to gain contacts and helpful interview skills that will prepare them for a career in consulting. We are always looking for and creating innovative ideas to bring MIT students into the growing world of consulting, and we value our relationships with our contacts at all firms.

Entrepreneurship and Technology Focus Group
The Technology and Entrepreneurship Focus Group seeks to help students pursue their technical and entrepreneurial interests. We organize events that explore current technology trends and different aspects of entrepreneurship. We also hold recruiting info sessions with technology companies to help our club members explore careers opportunities in science and engineering. In addition to organizing events, the Entrepreneurship and Technology Focus Group is responsible for the Technology and Entrepreneurship Forum. This student-organized conference is focused on enabling students turn their great ideas into amazing start-ups. The forum consists of panel discussions, start-up showcases, and networking events with individuals who transformed their innovations into companies.

Finance Focus Group
The Finance Focus Group is responsible for planning, organizing and executing on-campus events involving investment banks, hedge funds, and other financial institutions. These events include company presentations, panel discussions, interview workshops, networking luncheons, and more. A select few of the past events we have hosted include the Wall Street Diversity Luncheon, Hedge Fund Panel, Financial Services 101, Financial Mentorship Workshops and various trading simulation competitions.
