The World Ocean mechanical energy budget is a fundamental outstanding problem in physical oceanography, with important implications for problems ranging from the elusive rate and spatial distribution of diapycnal mixing to the vertical structure of eddy kinetic energy. Here we present updates on some aspects of the problem.
