Mechanisms of variability in a convective basin

The oceanic poleward heat transport and the meridional overturning circulation are strongly affected by what happens in convective basins, where dense water is formed. Interannual variability in the formation and export of dense water is mostly due to changes in the two main drivers: local buoyancy fluxes and the remotely-forced circulation. Their relative contribution is investigated by using an idealized model for a convective basin. ….
