As one of my undergraduate professors said, plenty of people will say bad things about you, so there's no reason to add to that by saying negative things about yourself. The question I have is what are good ways to make you proud of yourself? Sadly, there are many people who just seem genetically programmed to be self-effacing. In that case, I think the only thing to do is for the friends of the person in question to say nice things to him/her. So, try to give your friends nice (and sincere) comments when they deserve them.
