Article I: Name

The name of this organization shall be the Physics Graduate Student Council [PHYSICS-GSC].

Article II: Purpose

The PHYSICS-GSC shall:

I. Understand the concerns and needs of students at physics department and work with faculty to address those needs.
II. Take our voice to the MIT Graduate Student Council on a regular basis.
III. Host well planned and well funded socials, and try to increase the level of student-student and student-faculty interactions.
IV. Create a more unified graduate student population whose unique academic and social needs are better known, represented and met.
V. Act as an intermediary between students and the faculty and administration in the Department of Physics.
VI. Foster a sense of community among the student body of the Department of Physics.

Article III: Membership

I. Any graduate student interested in Physics is eligible to membership. A graduate student shall be a member when he/she is in the PHYSICS-GSC mailing list.
II. The membership of this organization will at all times contain at least 5 MIT students and be more than half MIT students.
III. This organization will not discriminate based on any characteristic listed in MIT's Nondiscrimination Statement.
IV. If this organization charges any monetary dues, there will be exceptions made for students that cannot afford these dues.

Article IV: Elections of Representatives

I. Election of representatives and officers shall occur once a year on Registration Day.
II. Any member of any degree program in the Department of Physics may nominate themselves as a representative and/or officer.
III. Elected representatives and officers are expected to attend PHYSICS-GSC meetings regularly.
IV. Removal from position
A. Quorum for officer removal requires all elected representatives and officers.
B. A representative may be removed by a 2/3rds majority vote.

 Article V: PHYSICS-GSC Officers

I. PHYSICS-GSC shall have three officers:

A. President
1. The president shall be the official representative of the PHYSICS-GSC to any other organization and to MIT.
2. The president shall preside over all meetings.
3. The president shall assume responsibility for all official correspondence of PHYSICS-GSC business outside of the PHYSICS-GSC and the Physics Department student body.

B. Treasurer
1. In the event of the president’s absence, the treasurer shall assume all responsibilities of the president.
2. The treasurer shall represent the group in all financial matters.
3. The treasurer shall maintain the group's monetary account(s).
4. The treasurer shall be the primary financial signatory of the PHYSICS-GSC.

C. Secretary
1. The secretary shall record the minutes of all PHYSICS-GSC meetings.
2. The secretary shall maintain and update the PHYSICS-GSC website.
3. The secretary shall be a second financial signatory of the PHYSICS-GSC.

Article VI: PHYSICS-GSC Activities and Meetings

I. The PHYSICS-GSC shall endeavor to foster community amongst the students in the Department of Physics. This may include, but is not limited to organized events and activities.
II. Meetings shall be held at least every month during the fall and spring semesters.
III. Meetings shall be presided over by the president, unless he/she is absent, and in that case the treasurer shall preside.
IV. All decisions shall be made by a majority vote of all members present.
V. Quorum for a meeting shall be 1/10th of the members of the PHYSICS–GSC.

Article VII: Amendments

I. Amendments shall be presented by any member of the PHYSICS-GSC.
II. Amendments shall be passed by 2/3rds of all voting members present.
III. Quorum for amending this constitution shall be all members of Physics-GSC.

Article VIII: ASA God Clause

The PHYSICS-GSC agrees to abide by the rules and regulations of the Association of Student activities and its executive board. This constitution, amendments to it, and the by-laws of this organization shall be subjected to review by the ASA Executive Board to insure that they are in accordance with the aforementioned rules and regulations.
