Upcoming Conferences and Workshops

  • 11/16/09: The 41st New England Complex Fluids Workshop will be held Friday, December 4, 2009 at Harvard University. The Workshop will begin with breakfast and registration at 8:45 a.m. and will end around 5:00 p.m. If you plan to attend the Workshop, please register before Wednesday, Dec. 2nd. Also, if you intend to give a sound bite (2-3 minute summary of your current research), then please submit a title and abstract when you register. We will provide 2009-10 Complex Fluids T-shirts to the first thirty sound bite speakers on the website. Invited talks will be given by Bettina Sobotka (BASF), Tonzani Stefano (Nature), Hartmut Loewen (Universitat Dusseldorf), Tuomas Knowles (Harvard), and Michael Rubinstein (Univ. of North Carolina). More information (including directions, maps, flyer, abstracts, etc.) and the online registration form are available at: http://www.complexfluids.org Remember that you must log in as a member before you are able to register.
  • 11/15/09: New England Complex Systems Institute Announcement: We are pleased to announce the dates of our upcoming courses on complex systems.
    • Jan 4-8, 2010 / Complex Physical, Biological & Social Systems
    • Jan 10, 2010 / Computer Programming and Complex Systems
    • Jan 11-15, 2010 / Complex Systems Modeling and Networks
  • TARGET AUDIENCE: These courses are intended for faculty, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and others who would like to gain an understanding of the fundamentals of complex systems for application to research in their respective fields, or as a basis for pursuing complex systems research. Each week is the equivalent of a one semester course in a one week format. They may be taken independently or consecutively. If desired, arrangements for credit at a home institution should be made in advance. See course descriptions online at: http://www.necsi.edu/events/winter2010.html
  • 10/15/09: I would like to bring your attention to the Dynamics Days Conference to be hosted by the Northwestern Institute on Complex Systems (NICO) on January 4-7, 2010. Dynamics Days is an annual conference on chaos and nonlinear dynamics. Sessions will cover a broad range of topics, including granular materials, time series analysis, non-equilibrium statistical physics, pattern formation, self-organization, and fluid dynamics. This year we are especially emphasizing theory and applications related to the dynamics of complex systems and complex networks, ranging from synchronization and cascading processes to the dynamics of biological systems. The invited participants include:
    • David Campbell, Boston University
    • Predrag Cvitanovic, Georgia Institute of Technology
    • Robert Ecke, Los Alamos National Laboratory
    • Jean-Pierre Eckmann, University of Geneva
    • Ulrike Feudel, University of Oldenburg
    • Daniel Gauthier, Duke University
    • Theo Geisel, MPI Dynamics and Self-Organization
    • Raymond Goldstein, University of Cambridge
    • Peter Grassberger, University of Calgary
    • Dirk Helbing, ETH, Zurich
    • Hans Herrmann, ETH, Zurich
    • Frank Julicher, MPI Physics of Complex Systems, Dresden
    • Natalia Komarova, University of California, Irvine
    • Holger Kantz, MPI Physics of Complex Systems, Dresden
    • Fred MacKintosh, Vrije University
    • Jose Onuchic, University of California, San Diego
