Social and communications researchers should be moving if we want to create new knowledge about the complex world where we live and if we want to change it. In our studies we should not only adopt a multi-methodological approach combining the positivist, systems, critical, and interpretative paradigms, but also we should incorporate other forms of understanding reality that are not that rigid. The cause-and-effect, function, and reason explanations that the classic paradigms allow us to produce tend to be very limited and are designed to satisfy and perpetuate the structure of a tribal scientific community. A freer multi-methodological approach should not only explore these major scientific paradigms but also incorporate fairy tails, magic, and dreams, and other forms of viewing and testing the world. I agree with Feyerabend, “anything goes,” our research could be an anarchic and humanitarian enterprise that promotes change not only in our vision of the world but also in the world itself.

The limitations of paradigms and scientific theories of the world have been explained by some historians and philosophers of science extensively. Popper, for instance, criticizes the positivist paradigm and its assumption that there is an objective reality. I agree with him, there is a problem with the logic of induction; singular statements that lead to universal statements are superficial because they ignore their falsifiability and do not allow us to test them.

We must also criticize the social structure of science. Although Campbell claims that social structure is not important for science and states that to talk about facts and to search the truth is what really matters, I think that the tribal aspects of the structure are overwhelming. I agree with Kuhn, science has a social structure that is rigid and is designed to perpetuate itself and its paradigms. He describes that structure as a “disciplinary matrix” and provides historical examples of how that structure determines the behavior, values, and believes from the group.

In my opinion, the only way to escape the uniformity of science is by moving and adopting an anarchistic multi/anti-methodology as the one proposed by Feyerabend. Knowledge, as he states, is “an ever increasing ocean of mutually incompatible alternatives, each single theory, each fairy-tale, each myth, that is part of the collection forcing the others into greater articulation and all of them contributing, via this process of competition, to the development of our consciousness.”(21) In the process of navigating that ocean we should become translators of many languages and worlds, explorers of foreign environments, dreamers in motion.

last week i arrived to austin. multiple farewells in cambridge reminded me of what does it mean to live for more than a year in a city. everyday life and its meaningful routines, trajectories, displacements, sights, noises, landscapes, venues, friends, neighborhoods, coffehouses, restaurants. now is gone. however, i will be back in this town. i know it for sure.

the initial settlement in my new city has been quite smooth. it has been very useful to know people down here before i moved. to have friends who can welcome you, host you, introduce you to their networks, invite you to places.

the south is wild. southern north america is another country. as i have realized, this country of the north is in fact many different countries. texas is wild, and everything is slower, the bureaucracy is alive and manage tons of paperwork, the public transportation system does not work eficiently, popular culture depends a lot in a sort of farmer imagery based on horns, cows, guns, shouts, football, bulls, beers.

somehow the wildness and hot weather makes me feel in a place more related to southamerica. the animals for instance remind me of the fauna of my country: armadillos, chicharras, mariamulatas, many birds, bugs. the flora as well, oak threes, eucaliptos, bushes, wild weeds, yellow flowers.

it is a challenge to overcome the stereotypes that surrounds the culture of this state. but i am sure will be a nice exercise of understanding a new world. so far i have liked the bilingualism that a big part of the population performs. it has been very interesting to get to know the tex-mex community which people is able to combine spanish and english in creative ways, switching between both languages while they speak, mixing them, developing new codes. i have also liked the way people interact to each other, they chat a lot, talk to strangers, and seem to be pretty up to mixing with others. or maybe they are just already mixed.

after almost two months of being in my home country i want to write a few things about the public life, the news, the politics, the jet set, the reality that is public to everybody. the narrative strategy of the telenovela has permeated everything. it seems to me that is a kind of filter, or maybe better a sort of distorted mirror in which colombians like to see themselves. the way the political news are presented is an example of it. specially regarding the corruption inside the political system. but, in the streets, in the open space, the public space of our cities, there is also the drama of the displaced people. almost homeless citizens that have been expelled out from their rural land. the relations with our international neighbors has been also dramatized so much that it has become normal to break diplomatic relationships year by year. and is perhaps the drama of the war what has increased this telenovelesque environment. the guerillas, the paramilitars, the militars, the police, the thief, the president, the watchemen. the danger of a betrayal, a fraud, of a back stab, is part not only of the fiction narratives but also of the politics, the economy, and it seem to be in the public space as well. specially in the cities. and specially in bogota. even if such a thing is not true, it seems to be a sort of unconscious feeling of the people. that is perhaps why it has been so nice to travel in this country after so many years of distance. it seems like i am not afraid. it seem like i dont care to share and to feel part of the mix. a chaotic mix indeed. it is necessary to change this narrative strategy. enough is enough. lets explore other genres and let the telenovela be only in a-prime frame.

el ritmo telenovelezco. el tempo del meledrama. en tiempo real. real time.

some weeks ago i visited the state of cordoba and fell in love with the deep caribbean region of colombia. today i just came back from a week in cartagena de indias, and have fallen in love with the caribbean coast again. i miss so much the sea roar. nothing is as pleasant as sleeping with a sea lullaby. perhaps the best song for sleeping. the rain is also good. this was the third time i visited la tortuga, a beach house located in front of the sea, at the crespo neighborhood of cartagena. however, this was the first time i became aware of the flow of sound, of the constant roaring of the sea. i am not sure why this happened until now. it could be possible that is the sea who is becoming noisier nowadays. perhaps is a matter of a season. there were certainly more birds at the shore. amazing. pelicans, seagulls, maria mulatas, and many other kinds of birds that i couldnt recognize. very inspiring to swim in the warm waters of the caribbean sea. it is very rewarding to float on the top of the waves and see the flights of the flocks and single birds. surprising to run into pelicans that are just floating near you. delightful to imagine and dream the story of the pelican man. coming soon. i love the caribbean time elongation. love the sea and the sound of the sea. all the waves crashing in constant motion. love to be inside the sea and to feel his enormous volumes.

M12 14. or 5 40. R15. QUAP. the recording lasts the length of the ride. the performer will start recording as soon as he enters the taxi. will be nice if is possible to place the microphone close to the speaker for better quality. at night, 9 or 10pm when there is a lot of activity will be a nice time. but also at other times.

the taxi driver that i spoke tonight told me once he was with a passenger that extended the lenght of the ride in order to listen to the radio telephone. it was live, en vivo, en tiempo real, that the central and other taxi drivers where narrating the chase. it was in the south of bogota. i didnt ask how did the chase ended. however, i asked if it will be ok if the passenger were recording the narration. he said it would be ok. no problem.

it is gone. it is for sure. everybody was speaking about it yesterday. i had to leave for the colombian caribbean coast and spent 20 hours travelling, unplugged from the news feed. while travelling, the sound of michael returned constantly. before my departure, the twitter universe was already displaying in real time the story of his death. friends where twitting RIPs, and early reminders

today was the public funeral, a massive and crowded show at the saples center in los angeles. the broadcast of the funeral confirmed the obsession of the media with one of its childs, heroes and monsters.

as a matter of sensationalism, very appropriate with the development of his life, his nose was missed during the autopsia. where did it go? who did steal it?

interestingly, the ghost of michael has been appearing in the caribbean reagion of colombia. first was in malambo, then in cartagena. perhaps is looking for his nose.
