My experience at M.I.T.

First of all, once I got off the plane, and was on my way to the dorms I was just so weirded out but yet glad to not see a single palm tree! I see too many in Florida (obviously). Also the BBQ was delicious, and I also found interesting how each of the different teams from different states presented themselves in the skit, and the location outside was just such a beauty on the lawn.

Wednesday, breakfast was healthy, and I believe that was the healthiest breakfast I have ever eaten since my trip to Tampa, FL for the March Madness for the Mind E-Team Exhibition. And the showcase was a breeze to me for — the fact that I’ve had to do it before, not to mention the building it’s self was a sight to behold. And I also thought it was pretty awesome to meet the different people who came by asking about our product. Unfortunately I was not able to partake in the M.I.T. Museum tours, but I did hear from my classmates that it was really interesting and it was so big that they were only able to view two floor’s of the museum while they still had a couple more floors to go.

Lunch, on Wednesday as well as every other day, was always good, big and hearty enough to fill your stomach for the entire day. And lab tours were really awesome. I loved the Glass room, I could careless about the heat but only how magnificent it was to mold glass and add color. Which is probably why I have such a fascination in watching the show “How It’s Made” on the Science Channel.

Presentations (Group 1), were very interesting, and it was cool to see how each high school represented themselves and their project. And everything seemed to be going off as planned and I believe on time, except for my team’s presentation. Even though my team tends to be hit with a bit of bad luck once in a while, we always seem to jump back better than ever (I guess you can say we learn quicker from our mistakes). And I must say due to the comments from people after the presentations & during the 2nd day of the showcasing, I am extremely proud on how we ended. Because two or more of my classmates had to painstakingly put back together a part of our product, which fell to the floor in the set up process. Even so they kept their cool and got it ready for when me and three other of my classmates were ready to present. And even though the producers of the presentation had to kill time, they took advantage and worked diligently with sweating bullets, but got the job done. And of course I can never forget how my friend Samir answered every trick question wonderfully, which kept the audience quiet.

Thursday’s Lobster Bake was delicious! I personally haven’t tried lobster since I was 8, and to taste it again was a relief to my taste buds. And I had a good time chatting with my friends over our dinner, and giving our lobsters names while we ate them. Even though it rained, it still didn’t stop us from singing the Hokey Pokey song. When we arrived at the dorms we just sat back and relaxed while me, my teacher, and others hooked up our projector down stairs to watch a movie.

Friday’s Banquette was awesome! Great light show that made me sad that we weren’t going to have a dance party, but mostly what made that night awesome were the guests. For example, the person who was a representative of his team who invented the rope climber — he showed his appearance by the huge wall-sized window outside on his team’s invention, showing how it takes him up and down, then later discussed how it would be in the market & available to only the military. Then towards the end was James McLurkin who showed his Robotic swarm do a number of things that showed team work and cooperation, and of course in the end I could never forget the cute in sync play of a Star Wars song done by little moving robots.

Saturday, it was over, but at least I have a couple of stories to bring back home.

The End? Already!? WHAT?! NOO!!

Basically the title was our reaction when we woke up that day.

We woke up and went to Stata to see the presentations. Of course they were amazing.

Lunch. Fufulling?

Then we got bored and decided have a photoshoot. It was amazing. I’m sure 25% percent of picture I took went into that, and I took 265 pictures. Afterwards we explored the campus one last time, and ditched Elena. Well not really, but it’s a complex story.

The Gala. They told us it would be formal?

It looked like we were in a rave.

The food was good, all the guest speakers were amazing and we won the riddles!! This is what we each won =]

Etch A Sketck!

After the Gala, we went back to my dorm were we tried to keep ourselves happy even though we knew this would be our last day. We kept ourselves entertained enough. We made the best of it and we had a lot of fun.

I really would like to thank Lemelson-MIT for giving us this chance to explore, invent, and to have fun. We got to know other schools really well, as well as get to know our team mates even better. The Odyssey, no, the entire year has been one great adventure for our InvenTeam, and I give my sincerest thanks to Lemelson-MIT for giving us that adventure.

I also want to thank Kayla and Michelle for giving Elena and I the opportunity to pour our thoughts into this blog. It’s a great sarcastic record of our events.

Me, Kayla, and Elena

Until Next Year?

315 Out.

The 2007 Odyssey

My name is Meily Machado and I come from George T Baker Aviation Team. I have to say that I’m so glad I had the opportunity of participating in such a great event, and been given the opportunity of showing my abilities as a person and a teammate. This has been a one in a lifetime opportunity. Our invention is the Lightweight Portable solar traffic signal, which helps during natural disasters such as hurricanes. I’m glad we had the chance of presenting and letting people know what we are trying to do to help the world. The Odyssey was wonderful. It is a very pleasant environment and everyone is very nice, specially as Leigh and Kayla that helped me very much.

Odyssey: Day 4

Our last full day at MIT was the 22nd. Like always, we had breakfast till 8a.m, but we finally enjoyed free time from 8:30 to 10. During that time, I went back into MIT’s main building and went into the Barker Engineering Library located on the 5th floor. The library had a massive reading room filled with the latest references, magazines, technical papers, comfy seats, and even interesting sculptures. Also, floors 6th-8th were filled with books at every corner, but it somehow managed to slide in a random seat between shelves. Of course, when i was there around 9, there was literally no one else in there except for the people at the front desk =D.

By 11:30, the final project presentations started. The most memorable presentation was from the Hillsboro InvenTeam. Somewhere in the middle of their powerpoint slide, the ‘blue screen of death’ showed up . Minutes later, a pirated version of Windows XP start-up screen was displayed and the audience started clapping! Unfortunately….or fortunately, the team was only joking and resumed to their “normal” presentation.

We were given free time again from 12 till 6:30. At 6:30pm, everyone attended the Odyssey Gala (our final banquet). The moment we walked in, we were covered by the multi-colored flashing lights. It was fun to hear the guys in our team complain about the pink light. After a few minutes, we viewed the Odyssey picture slide. It was strange that we didn’t notice the staff and their cameras at the point when the pictures were taken. So, as you can imagine we took…great pictures!!

Later on, it was revealed that my team, the Eleanor Roosevelt High School Inventeam won the riddle contest (special thanks to Saheed for correcting the mistake)!! So we each received a game pen, either Etch a Sketch or Operation. After dinner, James McLurkin, the inventor of “Robot Ants” gave us a presentation along with a demonstration of his robotic swarm.

After the Gala, we all met at Anuj’s room where some of our team members left to play frisbee while the rest went on their laptops (I stayed behind =). We all tried to savor our final moments at MIT one way or another. I truly wish that I was able to stay there longer. The Odyssey has been a wonderful experience that I will always remember. Through out the week, I met new friends, gained rare experiences (labs, showcase, tours), learned about future technologies that may enter the market, and even discovered new facts about my team members.

Thank you MIT and the Lemelson-MIT Program for this great experience!!
