National Mentoring Month

Hello InvenTeams,
January is National Mentoring Month. Tell us how a mentor has helped your InvenTeam through the grant cycle. Think about how you can recognize your mentor for his/her guidance on “Thank Your Mentor Day,” January 22, 2009.

One of my greatest mentors has been Kristin Joyce (above c.2004), the former communications officer for the Lemelson-MIT Program. Kristin supervised me, when I was the communications coordinator. Through Kristin I became familiar with The Associated Press Stylebook, an essential tool for writing for the media. Most of all, Kristin created a team environment, which empowered me to learn new things and made work a lot of fun.

Cheers,
Melissa Makofske, Lemelson-MIT Program communications officer

Vote for OneWorld’s People of 2008

Greetings InvenTeams,

Dr. Martin Fisher, the 2008 winner of the $100,000 Lemelson-MIT Award for Sustainability, has been announced as one of ten finalists for OneWorld’s People of 2008 (view a short video profile of Fisher). The finalists were chosen among many people nominated to represent what is best in the fields of human rights, social justice, and sustainable development. Fisher was nominated for helping African farmers rise out of poverty with his low-cost, human-powered irrigation pumps, developed through his social enterprise, KickStart. Read about other inspiring aid workers and cast your vote! The winner will be chosen in early December.

Cheers,
Melissa Makofske

Congratulations, 2009 InvenTeams!

Welcome to the InvenTeams’ Blog: this is your communications portal to seek advice, report progress, and share success stories. Developing your own invention will be a journey unlike other high school activities. We hope you all enjoy this rewarding process and look forward to reading about your experiences!
