Personalized Driving Insurance rates?

November 14th, 2006 by Vatsal

Norwich Union has introduced a new driving insurance scheme based on where, how much and how you drive. If it does take off on London, this might be a good startup idea for US metros as well, Anyone interested :)?

The best part of the deal is that they offer you “speed camera detection”.

From their website:

http://www.payasyoudriveinsurance.co.uk/index.htm

” “Pay As You Drive”â„¢ insurance* is a revolutionary new type of car insurance, which enables us to provide comprehensive cover that’s as individual as you are.
Using the latest GPS (Global Positioning System) technology we are able to calculate monthly insurance premiums based on how often, when and where you drive.
“Pay As You Drive”â„¢ insurance could put you in the driving seat and give you increased control of your premiums, you can also benefit from a range of other in-car features including; a free 30 day trial of satellite navigation, a free 30 day trial of speed camera detection and 24 hour access to a personal assistant via your in-car Assistance Button allowing you access to immediate help in the event of an accident or breakdown. You wont have to remember telephone numbers or even know exactly where you are. ”

Some insurance companies are already testing that on Italy. Basically you can turn the insurance “on” by sending an SMS and reporting how far and how long you will drive. Pretty innovative.

I believe that Progressive Insurance (an ohio company) has been doing this for quite some time. They charge you based on the miles driven and your record. I think they also put a meter into the car to make sure you don’t drive too fast….I heard or read about this somewhere so I am running off of memory. Perhaps it was all a big test case -but I think they had it as an optional offering for their customers.

This is the first time i hear about this idea., but never the less it is a good idea which I think it could be implemented. Like in singapore there are weekend cars, where we can only drive the car only on weekend
