CSC Rules and Instructions
Introduction
From the CSC web page: The Club Sports Council (’CSC’) comprises MIT students (’Officers’) elected by the student leaders of all club sports. The purpose of the CSC is to represent all club sports in all administrative matters, including but not limited to representation within the MIT Department of Athletics, Physcial Education, and Recreation (DAPER) and the MIT Association of Student Activities (ASA). Among other things, the CSC distributes and oversees club sports budgets, approves club sports space allocations, approves club sports instructors, and generally advocates for student interests as they relate to club sports.
The CSC is important for our club because they delegate our funding, our practice space, our space to hold tournaments, our instructors, our scrimmage privileges, our locker space, and so on.

Rules
In order to remain a club sport in good standing (so they continue to give us funding, gym space, etc), we have to abide by the following:
- Who can play (exception: scrimmages, see Section e)
- Everyone who plays or practices with us must be MIT affiliated (student, staff, faculty, or spouse/partner with spouse MIT ID). If there is someone in the area that would really improve our practices but is not MIT affiliated, it may be worth it to get them part-time instructor status (see Section d).
- We must have at least 50% students on the roster, at each practice, and on each team we send to a tournament (for nationals funding purposes, the more students on the nationals team, the better).
- **note: often, members of our club play in tournaments with non-MIT people. This is fine, but not funded by the club. We CANNOT have non-MIT people on any team that is competing under the name “MIT.”***
- Meetings
- We must send a representative to the CSC annual meeting 2. We do NOT have to send a rep to the ASA general body meeting – the CSC goes and represents all club sports
- Reporting (forms available at http://web.mit.edu/clubsports/)
- Each person who practices with us must sign an individual wavier. We have to have these in case the CSC ever checks
- Each fall we have to fill out our CSC roster
- Each spring we must submit a financial allocation report detailing the needs and costs of the two separate squads.
- Each spring we submit a reactivation packet, where we justify our instructors, budget, facilities usage, and so one. This is where we can request more/different practice time. Because of the difference in levels of play of the two squads the CSC acknowledges that joint practices may often be ineffective and possibly dangerous, and will bear this in mind when reviewing facilities requests.
- Whenever we do something cool (win a tournament, host a tournament, someone on the club wins an award, etc) we should email the CSC for their website (and to keep them happy with us).
- Instructors (The ONLY people who do not have to be MIT affiliated)
- We can have up to two full-time instructors. Each instructor gets a free athletic card, and we can get up to $750 of CSC money per instructor (we ask for it in our reallocation packet) to pay them.
- We can also have part-time instructors (I think as many as we want, within reason). We must justify what these people add to the club by filling out the part time instructor form (on the website). The CSC will get them a card that will allow them into the gym to work with the club no more than 1x/week.
- Scrimmages. The CSC will allow us to invite other teams to scrimmage us during our regular practice time (and let those people into the gym for free) as long as the following are satisfied:
- They would reciprocate (we might possibly go to their place sometime)
- We are not charging for the event
- We notify the CSC (email is ok) as soon as possible (1 week advance minimum) to request to have a scrimmage, with the name of the team (s) (and if possible, the names of the players) coming
- We provide the DAPER at the gym the names of the players coming, so they can let them in for free.
- Nationals
- The CSC often rounds up extra money for nationals, and have often paid our entry fee. As soon as we start talking about nationals (~ January) we should email the CSC with the information in the nationals questionnaire (on their website)
- The CSC will usually fund nationals team in direct proportion to the number of students on the team. More students = more $$.
- The CSC recognizes that the two squads compete at different levels, and therefore would reasonably each be able to send a squad to the USAV National Tournament, and request special Nationals Funding from the CSC. The two teams would compete at two very different levels, so players on the roster of the competitive team will not be allowed to play on the instructional team due to USAV regulations. As long as the rosters for these two squads do not overlap, the CSC will consider these requests separately, and the nationals funding allocated to one team will not affect the funding allocated to the other.
- Resources
- Recruiting: the CSC coordinates recruiting at the athletic midway
- First aid kits: we can request them at the DuPont equipment desk for up to 4 hours (for practice) or over a weekend (Fri – Mon)
- Access to Trainers: as a club in good standing our members can attend the Monday morning sports medicine clinic offered by the MIT trainers (this is our only access to the MIT trainers). Sign up at the DuPont equipment desk.
- The CSC delegates the lockers in DuPont – we justify our locker (and could request more storage space if necessary) in the reactivation packet
- Same with bulletin boards in DuPont
General Advice
The CSC is run by students, who are very very busy. They are generally well meaning and want to help club sports at MIT, but sometimes take a long time to respond to emails, and may want to run club sports differently than we would like. They have a lot of power over us (since they control the money and our access to the gym). When interacting with them, be unfailingly polite. If you don’t hear back from them, be persistent. This may be a pain, but when we play by the rules and they are happy with us, they help us get more funding and gym time.
Also, any student is eligible to run for a position as a CSC officer. We would definitely benefit from having one of our own on the CSC. So run!
