ben-ography

thats meHi, my name is Ben and this is my website.

I put this site together as a way to share a few of my thoughts that I think might be worth reading, or least thoughts that I feel like sharing.  I’ve added a few sections to show a bit about my life and what I spend my time doing in the Galleries section.  I’ve also included some of the things I’ve worked on, both big and small, in the Portfolio section.

I am currently a graduate student at MIT, working towards a Master’s of Science in Mechanical Engineering.  My advisor is Dr. David Wallace, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and teacher of 2.009 (Product Engineering Processes) and 2.744 (Product Design).  These days, I spend most of my time TAing 2.009 and defining my research in the area of kilowatt-scale wind turbines.  Previously I worked with Professor Tonio Buonassisi in the Laboratory for Photovoltaic Research developing novel methods for stress imaging in silicon.

Outside of research, my other academic interest is in mechanical design.  From January-August 2008 and May-August 2009, I worked in the iPod/iPhone Product Design group at Apple: a truly exciting and innovative group of engineers.  While at school, I try to keep my hand in design by taking classes in the subject and puzzling over my own projects.  During the Spring 2009 semester, I was an instructor in 2.00b (Toy Product Design) and am currently a TA for 2.009 (Product Engineering Processes).

When I’m not in the classroom, I tend to keep myself pretty busy.  I stay involved with the Boy Scouts of America as an assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 205 in Newton, MA and am a past member of the National Executive Board.  Also, I’m active in the Sigma Chi Fraternity as the Chapter Advisor of the Alpha Theta Chapter and a member of the National Executive Committee.  While at MIT, I try to spend most of my weekends camping, hiking and climbing and, up until this year, was a member of the men’s Ultimate Frisbee team.

That’s me, in brief.  I’m a curious kind of person, and love exploring, both in the machine shop and the outdoors.  If you’re a potential employer looking at this page, odds are you’ve already got a copy of my resume, but just in case here’s another PDF version.  If you’d like to contact me, the best way is to e-mail popebe [at] gmail.com  Otherwise, please take a look around, and enjoy!
