Our Purpose

TechVenture was founded on the belief that any student at MIT with a promising startup idea should have the opportunity to turn that idea into a company. During our time at MIT, each of us has come into contact with many such student entrepreneurs. Our organization is committed to providing them with the means necessary to mature their ideas into successful companies. Through our workshops and programs, outlined below, we aim to bridge the gap between MIT students and venture capitalists, creating a channel through which MIT students can receive seed startup funding and guidance from professionals.

Our Place

There exists a vibrant entrepreneurial community at MIT, supported by respected organizations such as MIT $100K competition, the Sloan Undergraduate Management Association (SUMA), and the Entrepreneurs Club (E-Club). Our group believes that we have found a niche within this environment through which we can contribute to the entrepreneurial landscape in a unique way.

Unlike the MIT $100K, which is a business-plan competition targeting MBAs and graduate students, our competition is idea-based and targets undergraduates. While the importance of a quality business plan should not be de-emphasized, we have seen countless examples of successful companies that did not start with a top-notch business plan. Furthermore, many undergraduates with innovative ideas aren't equipped with the experience and business plan writing skills necessary to turn those ideas into solid business plans. Our program offers these students an alternative through which their ideas can receive exposure to professional opinion and guidance.

Our group differs from SUMA and E-Club by specifically acting as a liaison between students and venture capitalists. Our startup program, through which MIT entrepreneurs can receive direct guidance and support from VC firms, is also unique to TechVenture. With the combination of these differentiating qualities, we believe that our group's values and goals successfully complement those of existing organizations.
